Presenter: Mimi Lee is the economist with Explore Local, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. She’s leading the consumer research on local food demand study in Alberta and works collaboratively with Statistics Canada and farm direct marketing specialists across the provinces to develop statistical analyses to enhance the understanding of economic benefits in direct marketing.
Our research tells us in Alberta, 78% of consumers had made at least one purchase at a farmers’ market in 2016. Food purchased at the farmers’ market and farm retail had exceeded one billion dollars in value and accounted for about 10% of Alberta’s annual household food expenditure. Learn what were the key drivers for the increase in direct marketing sales and the recent statistics comparing direct marketing farms in Alberta with other provinces.
