Debbie Klein – Helping People Succeed

Klein, Debbie Recognize this face? Many Albertans do as Debbie Klein, PHEc., has appeared both in television commercials and interviews highlighting the work of Credit Counseling Services of Alberta (CCSA).

Currently, Debbie, is the Supervisor of the Edmonton office of CCSA, a “… not-for-profit, consumer debt counseling service and the exclusive provider of the Orderly Payment of Debts program in Alberta. The mission of CCSA is to educate Albertans in personal money management and the wise use of credit, and to provide alternatives for individuals and families facing financial crisis.”

Originally born and raised near Yorkton, SK, Debbie began her post-secondary studies pursuing Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S). She states I took two years off to become the Regional 4-H Specialist in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The job involved lots of travel, presentations, working with volunteers, liaising with boards, summer camping programs for kids, and promotion work.”

Debbie then returned from the workforce to complete a degree in Home Economics at the U of Alberta in 1989 with the intention of using her skills to work in a rural area. Her rural ambitions turned into urban ambitions though upon marrying a local Edmonton man six months after graduation. Prior to joining CCSA in 1997, Debbie worked for eight years with the Society for the Retired and Semi-Retired in Edmonton Between the two organizations Debbie has had the opportunity to directly supervise six practicum students.

In addition, she has enhanced her skills by being trained as a mediator through the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Association, completing some of the coursework toward a Certified Financial Planner designation, and she is also an Insolvency Counselor for the purposes of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

Debbie passes on that what she enjoys most is the direct interaction with clients. “People are usually very relieved that their financial situation is not as bad as they think it is, and that there is a solution that was unknown to them.”

Debbie makes her home in the Edmonton area with her young daughter and husband. In her leisure time she enjoys gardening, slo-pitch, biking, attending theatre, and hosting parties.
