Peggy Chudzy - Fashion Studies Teacher

Chudzy, Peggy “Find a job that you really like that pays for your passion” is the advice that Peggy has often given to her students and it has been a guide for her throughout her career. Graduating with a BHEc and BEd from the University of Manitoba, Peggy first taught Junior High in Manitoba and then moved on to Ontario where she spent the next 15 years. Between transfers and raising a family she worked as a substitute teacher in Mississauga, Ottawa and Oakville while also running a home based custom sewing business.

Peggy’s move to Calgary in 1996 led her to full time teaching and her current position as the Fashion Studies teacher at William Aberhart High School. As the past Curriculum Leader of CTS (Career & Technology Studies) and current Curriculum Leader of Communication and Recognition at the school, her days are full. As the Vice President of Home Ec with the provincial CTS Specialist Council and the ATA representative on the CTS Advisory Committee with Alberta Education, she is also filling her “extra” time. It is, however, being able to teach that she finds the most rewarding. Allowing her to pass on the skills of having had her own business as well as the practical skills involved in Clothing and Textiles it is the “A-Ha” gleam in their eyes that inspires her. It is the diverse set of skills in subject areas, as well as the basics of presentation, communication and management, that Home Economics gave her that Peggy feels is the strength of our profession. She says that “with a larger view of the world we have more to offer”.

Peggy carries her enthusiasm to her personal life; quilting with her daughters, gardening, playing euchre, reading mysteries and traveling with her husband on their 1600 Yamaha Roadstar motorcycle; and 2005 is the year for Utah!
