Looking Back - Moving Forward- 2010 AHEA Conference

April 15-17, 2010, Red Deer, Alberta

75 for 75…. the 2010 AHEA Conference will celebrate the 75th anniversary of our association.  We would be thrilled if we had 75 home economists/human ecologists in attendance.  Please consider coming and also inviting a former colleague or classmate or even a friend who might be interested in the program.

We plan to start the conference on Thursday evening by attending the dinner theatre at the Black Knight Inn.  This could be a celebration party, a reunion or perhaps just a Christmas gift to yourself!  We will be asking for confirmation of attendance by January 15.  The dinner theatre is $60 or, if you like, the hotel is offering a package of a double occupancy room and theatre ticket for $119.79 per person.  The play is called "Heat-stroke", classified as a comedy thriller taking place at a Spanish villa.

Friday, April 16 -
Pre-conference Workshop: Vision/Mission and Keynote Session - Compassion Fatigue

A pre-conference workshop on Vision/Mission on Friday morning will by hosted by the AHEA Provincial Board.  This will be followed by a Friday afternoon keynote session on Compassion Fatigue with speaker Michelle Hamilton. This will be open to the public.

We will celebrate our 75th Anniversary Friday evening with special displays and presentations including the Awards Ceremony and possibly a student fashion show.

Saturday, April 17 -

  • Family Finance
  • Food Safety
  • Triple Flip children's clothing
  • Bullying
Saturday morning there will be a keynote session on Demographics with Kristen Cumming who will talk about the changing definition of family and home over the past 75 years including generational experiences and an optimistic discussion about the future of our profession.

We are pleased to announce that 3 of the 4 speakers for the Saturday breakout sessions are home economists or human ecologists.  Topics include Family Finance with Patricia French, Food Safety with Lynne McMullen, Triple Flip children's clothing company with Linda Maslechko and Dare to Care, a session on the many aspects of bullying.

Have we caught your interest? Whet your appetite? Tickled your fancy?  We hope so.

We hope that you are now moving to your calendar to circle the dates April 15, 16 & 17.  Watch for the final program and registration information coming out in late January or early February.  We look forward to seeing you in Red Deer in April 2010.
